ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The President & CEO is a key leadership position within the community who will be responsible for ensuring the organization's effectiveness in lifting and strengthening the nonprofit sector to effectively meet their missions and serve their respective communities. Reporting to an engaged and supportive Board of Directors, the President & CEO is accountable for strategic planning, fiscal integrity, and the delivery of high-quality services and programs to Hawaiʻi’s non-profit organizations.

Because of its unique role as a convener, HANO has credibility to bridge the gap between funders, nonprofit organizations, and communities. For example, HANO was instrumental in the formation of the Funder Hui, which resulted in a rapid, coordinated philanthropic response to the COVID pandemic in Hawaiʻi. In addition, HANO provided technical assistance to nonprofits to navigate government grant and loan programs that were critical to their survival. The relationships and trust HANO built with the Funder Hui allowed it to quickly mobilize support for residents who were directly impacted by Maui’s recent wildfire disaster.

As a trusted representative of the non-profit community, HANO occupies a trusted position as an advocate, mediator, educator, and facilitator. In response to its recent successes, funders are now looking to HANO to take on projects and stand-up new programs to grow the capacity of the nonprofit sector. The organization’s budget has tripled in size in the last several years, and HANO is poised for future growth.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The President and CEO will be responsible for overseeing all program and support functions within CFS, including Behavioral Health Services, Adult and Family Services, Early Childhood & Children's Services, Human Resources, Fiscal, Information Technology, Support Services, and Facilities/Properties. This role holds ultimate responsibility for the organization's strategic planning, fiscal integrity, service quality, and the management of CFS-Real Property operations. The President and CEO will provide guidance and supervision to the Executive Vice President & COO, Chief Advancement Officer, and Chief Finance Officer. As a senior member of the Executive Leadership Team, the President and CEO will embody the organization's values of HOPE while advising and supporting the team. Additionally, this role will manage CFS Board of Directors meetings, organize Board Committees' activities, and represent CFS on relevant Boards, Committees, and Task Forces aligned with our mission.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai‘i seeks a dynamic, experienced chief executive to lead a civil liberties agenda throughout Hawai‘i. Founded in 1920, the ACLU is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan organization which uses legal, advocacy, and public education approaches to protect and promote a broad range of constitutional issues including individual rights and freedoms, free speech, racial justice, criminal legal reform, immigrant’s rights, voting rights, privacy, religious liberty, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, and more.

Founded in 1965, the ACLU of Hawai‘i is an affiliate of the national ACLU, the leading defender of civil liberties guaranteed by our nation’s Bill of Rights. Based in Honolulu, the ACLU of Hawai‘i has an operating budget of approximately $2.1 million.  The organization is led by a 15 member Board of Directors and a team of 12 staff members who work to protect the rights of everyone in Hawai‘i and advance our priority issues.

Accountable to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be a strong partner with leadership to further advance an affiliate that has made gains in many core ACLU issues. The next leader will further advance the affiliate’s legal, advocacy, and public education programs in new ways to meet emerging challenges – all within a special cultural and political environment where relationships are crucial to success.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the ACLU of Hawai‘i and is responsible for giving direction and leadership to the organization as it pursues its mission, strategies, goals, and objectives.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director brings clear vision and leadership to execute on the mission of the organization, possesses excellent organizational acumen and outstanding communication skills, and the ability to ensure financial health and stability.

We are seeking a collaborative leader who will be sensitive to how the local ACLU can remain a fearless advocate while being mindful of Hawaii’s special history and the significance of multi-cultural relationships in an island community. Such a leader will increase the vitality of a strong and stable organization and help build new capabilities. The successful candidate must be an exceptional leader with a deep commitment to civil liberties and civil rights. And they must have the ability to work productively with grassroots and all levels of government, within a non-partisan framework.
